Easter Island

As Easter is approaching I would like to make you interested in Easter Island!  Easter Island or  Rapa Nui is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai (/ˈmoʊ.aɪ/), created by the early Rapanui people. It is a World Heritage Site. Much of the island constitutes a national park. 

The name "Easter Island" was invented by the island's first recorded European visitor, the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who encountered it on Easter Sunday in 1722.

The large stone statues, or moai, which Easter Island is world-famous for, were carved from 1100–1680 CE. Although often described as "Easter Island heads", the statues are actually complete torsos - the figures are kneeling with their hands placed on their stomachs. Shifting soils have buried some moai up to their necks.

95% of moai were carved out of volcanic ash or tuff found inside the extinct volcano Rano Raraku.

The largest moai ever raised is known as "Paro". It weighs 82 tons and is 9.8 m (32.15 ft) long.

Ahu are stone platforms on which moai are situated.

The biggest ahu is 220 meters (722 ft) and holds 15 statues, some of which are 9 meters (30 ft) high. Ahu are mostly found along the coastline.
Even though Easter Island is regarded as "the most remote inhabited island in the world", maybe one day we will have the opportunity to set foot on it!
