Know how - learning vocabulary

Dziś część pierwsza cyklu 'know how', w którym będę przedstawiać moje wskazówki i rady, aby uczynić Waszą naukę języka jeszcze bardziej efektywną, ciekawą i przyjemną. Wszystkie rady wynikają z wiedzy teoretycznej, którą nabyłam podczas studiów oraz z mojej wieloletniej praktyki w nauczaniu...Cześć pierwszą postanowiłam poświęcić słownictwu. Let's get started, shall we?

name what you can see around

1. Name what you see around,

A pot with a label

2. Label..label!

a diary

3. Express yourself!

look for nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs

4. Think beyond!
Ta rada jest adresowana szczególnie do maturzystów i osób chcących przystąpić do First Certificate Exam.

Revision is essential!

5. Revise!

Use authentic materials

6. Get access to 'real English'

Spring flowers ...

Flower names are often used when talking about spring changes...Names of flowers are quite easy to remember as they are often similar to their equivalents (=odpowiedniki) in our mother tongue (=język ojczysty). What may be problematic is their pronuciation (wymowa):

tulips

TULIP /ˈtjuːlɪp/, for those of you who are not familiar with (=zaznajomieni z) the phonetic transcription symbols (=symbole transkrypcji fonetycznej) - /tjulyp/

daffodil

DAFFODIL /ˈdæfədɪl/ , simplified transcription - /dafedyl/

crocuses

CROCUS /ˈkrəʊkəs/  - /krełkes/

narcissi

NARCISSUS  /nɑːˈsɪsəs/ (/nasyses/)   (pl. narcissi) /nɑːˈsɪsaɪ/ (/nasysaj/)

hyacinths

HYACINTH /ˈhaɪəsɪnθ/ (/hajesinf/)

When the weather is nice go for a walk and observe nature slowly waking up after winter stagnation. Try to recall (=przypomnieć sobie) the flower names with their pronunciation!

'If God was one of us' - II conditional - answers

Here are the answers to the exercise concerning Joan Osborne's song - 'If God was one of us' (pl. Gdyby Bóg był jednym z nas). As you know, most of the lyrics of the song are conditional sentences. The writer of the lyrics has used the second conditional (drugi okres warunkowy) to talk about quite unreal situation - meeting God (spotkanie Boga), seeing his face (ujrzenie jego twarzy) and having the opportunity to ask him a question (stanie przed możliwością zapytania go o coś)...

If God ……had……… a name, what …..would…… it be
(gdyby Bóg miał imię, jakie by było)
And ……would……… you call it to his face

(czy wypowiedziałbyś je prosto w twarz)
If you …were……faced with him in all his glory

(gdybyś stanął z nim twarzą w twarz, w całej jego chwale)
What ……would…… you ask if you ..…had…… just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God ……was*……… one of us

(gdyby Bóg był jednym z nas)
Just a slob like one of us

(tylko niechlujem, jak jeden z nas)
Just a …..stranger…… on the bus

(tylko obcym w autobusie)
Trying to make his way home

(próbującym dotrzeć do domu)

If God ……had……… a face what …...would…… it look like

(gdyby Bóg miał twarz, jakby wyglądała)
And …..would…… you …want……… to see

(i czy chciałbyś zobaczyć)
If seeing meant that you …...would…   …have to…… believe

(gdy zobaczenie oznaczałoby, że musiałbyś uwierzyć)
In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets

(w takie rzeczy jak niebo, Jezus, wszyscy święci i prorocy)

And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God ……was……… one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a …...stranger…… on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home

(on próbuje dotrzeć do domu)
Back up to heaven all alone

(całkiem sam, w korkach w drodze do nieba)
Nobody …calling……… on the phone

(nikt nie dzwoni)
Except for the Pope maybe in Rome

(oprócz papieża, chyba w Rzymie)

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God ……was……… one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a ……stranger……… on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody ……calling……… on the phone
Except for the Pope maybe in Rome

* zazwyczaj w drugim okresie warunkowym stosujemy 'were' dla wszystkich osób, możemy jednak użyć tradycyjnej formy 'was' dla 1 i 3 os. lp., szczególnie w języku potocznym.

Have you found the listening exercise difficult? I hope you haven't!
I also hope that this song makes it easier for you to undersand the second conditional!

'If God was one of us' - II conditional

Today I have prepared a Joan Osborne's song - 'If God was one of us' (pl. Gdyby Bóg był jednym z nas). The song is perfect if you find it difficult to understand the second conditional (drugi okres warunkowy). The second conditional, as you surely remember, is used to talk about unreal things and events that are not likely to happen, e.g. winning a lottery, being somebody different, meeting the queen of the UK during your stay in London, etc.
The pattern is quite easy to remember :
if + past simple + would + infinitive
części zdania możemy oszczywiście odwrócić :
would + infinitive + if + past simple

for example:
If I won a lottery, I would buy a new house.
I would be very happy if I met Queen Elizabeth in London.

You can read more about conditional sentences HERE

The song focuses on (=koncentruje się na) a quite unreal situation - meeting God (spotkanie Boga) and having the opportunity to ask him a question (stanie przed możliwością zadania mu pytania).
Listen to the song and try to complete the gaps! Remember that most of the sentences have been written using the second conditional!

If God …………… a name, what …………… it be
And …………… you call it to his face
If you …………… faced with him in all his glory
What …………… you ask if you …………… just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God …………… one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a …………… on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God …………… a face what …………… it look like
And …………… you …………… to see
If seeing meant that you …………… …………… believe
In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God …………… one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a …………… on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody …………… on the phone
Except for the Pope maybe in Rome

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God …………… one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a …………… on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody …………… on the phone
Except for the Pope maybe in Rome

In my next post you'll find the answers and my translation of the lyrics!

'You're beautiful' and 'L'amour est dans le pré'

Today I'd like to recall (=przywołać) one of the most well-known (=dobrze znanych) songs of James Blunt's  - 'You're beautiful'. When I hear the song it makes me think of a French reality TV series 'L'amour est dans le pré' (in my free translation: 'Love is in the fields', 'Miłość jest na polach' ;), as it was its opening credits (=czołówka) song. The programme entitled (=zatytułowany) 'Farmer wants a wife' premièred (=miał premierę) in the UK. The broadcast focuses on a group of confirmed bachelors (=starych kawalerów) and maidens (=panien) who look for love among women and men who would like to share their life with them on their farms. I liked the French version a lot and I recommend it to all French learners. Watching the programme not only can you enhance your listening skills (=rozwinąć umiejętności słuchania), admire French rural areas (=wiejskie tereny) but also get to know (=poznać) various French accents.
I invite you to listen to 'You're beautiful', a 2005 James Blunt's song and complete the gaps (you can check the answers at the bottom of the page) !
