'You're beautiful' and 'L'amour est dans le pré'

Today I'd like to recall (=przywołać) one of the most well-known (=dobrze znanych) songs of James Blunt's  - 'You're beautiful'. When I hear the song it makes me think of a French reality TV series 'L'amour est dans le pré' (in my free translation: 'Love is in the fields', 'Miłość jest na polach' ;), as it was its opening credits (=czołówka) song. The programme entitled (=zatytułowany) 'Farmer wants a wife' premièred (=miał premierę) in the UK. The broadcast focuses on a group of confirmed bachelors (=starych kawalerów) and maidens (=panien) who look for love among women and men who would like to share their life with them on their farms. I liked the French version a lot and I recommend it to all French learners. Watching the programme not only can you enhance your listening skills (=rozwinąć umiejętności słuchania), admire French rural areas (=wiejskie tereny) but also get to know (=poznać) various French accents.

"Fame - I'm gonna live forever!"

Have you watched the television series 'Fame'? Today I've heard the theme song (=piosenka przewodnia) of the series, which evoked (=przywołała) lots of recollections (=wspomnienia)...The 1980s series focused on a group of students of the New York High School (=szkoła średia) for the Performing Arts (=sztuka widowiskowa). The aspiring (=początkujący) actors, dancers, musicians and singers were taught that the only way to gain (=zyskać) fame was to train hard, develop (=rozwijać) their abilities and overcome weaknesses (=przezwyciężać słabości). It seems so different from what we can observe nowadays (=w dzisiejszych czasach)! One can become a celebrity within a few days (=w przeciągu kilku dni), regardless of (=bez wzgledu na) their skills and talents...

An interview with Paul Wesley

The channel TVN has broadcast an interview (=wywiad) with an idol of today's teenagers - Paul Wesley. The actor, whose real name is Paul Thomas Wasilewski, is of Polish origin (=pochodzenie) - both his parents are Polish. Wasilewski made his debut in soap operas ('Another World', 'The Guiding Light'). He also took part (= wziąć udział) in Agnieszka Holland's HBO TV drama - 'Shot in the Heart', playing a sentenced to capital punishment (=kara śmierci) murder of two Mormons. The actor has participated in numerous diverse (=różnorodne) projects, for instance 'Young Arthur', 'Peaceful Warrior', 'Killer Movie', 'Law &Order', 'Smallville', 'The O.C.' and 'SCI: Miami'. It is, though, thanks to (=dzięki) his role in 'The Vampire Diaries' that Wasilewski  has won the admiration (=podziw) and love especially of the female audience (=widownia).

To be honest, I am not a fan of vapire films and series...what drew my attention (=uwaga) was the linguistic (=językowa) part of the interview - Wasilewski speaks Polish very well, nonetheless (=niemniej jednak), as he stresses (=podkreśla) himself, he needs some practice in order to speak Polish fluently (=płynnie). When we don't practise a language, we tend to forget words, expressions...That's why it is essential (=very important) to try to keep in touch (=pozostawać w kontakcie) with a language, either (=albo) via (=przez) direct conversation with native speakers or (=albo) thanks to the Internet, the radio, TV news and newspapers.

The actor speaks very warmly about his grandparents, doesn't he?

Allo allo!

Today I have decided to recall (=przywołać) the cult British sitcom - 'Allo, allo!'. The series was broadcast on BBC One from 1982 to 1992. The story revolves around (=kręci się wokoło) a small town café (=kawiarnia) in Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War. The town Nouvion (placed in the North of France) was robbed of its valuables (=kosztowności), among others the first cuckoo clock ever made and a painting of the Fallen Madonna by Van Klomp (also known among the fans of the series as 'The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies'). The local commandant (=komendant), Colonel Kurt Von Strohm, wishing to keep the artefacts for himself, forces the owner of the café, René Artois, to hind the painting in his bistro (=a small informal restaurant). The picture also becomes Hitler's object of desire, which leads to a series of comical events and misunderstandings (=nieporozumień). René is forced to cooperate with the Resistance (=ruch oporu) and his café becomes a hideaway (=kryjówka) for two brave but a bit lost and confused (=zdezorientowany) British airmen (=lotnicy). At the same time René tries to keep his affair (=romans) with a waitress secret from his wife, Edith (who regularly attempts at singing in the café in spite of evident lack of talent).

The series is also very interesting from linguistic point of view - four different languages (French, English, German and Italian) would have been difficult for the audience to keep up with (=nadążać). The authors of the series decided to represent each language with English spoken in a theatrical (=teatralny) foreign (=obcy) accent, which has produced a very comic effect.
