Tanita Tikaram - Twist in My Sobriety

Hello! I’ve prepared a new listening exercise
for you. This time it’s a song by Tanita Tikaram – “Twist in My Sobriety”.
The song probably doesn’t match the mood of New Year’s Eve, yet, in my opinion, it’s incredibly atmospheric…
Watch the song’s sepia coloured video clip, which, by the way, was set in a rural village in Bolivia, and try to complete the gaps!

All God's children need travelling s………………..
Drive your p……………….. from here
All good people read good b………………..
Now your conscience is clear (I hear you talk girl)
Now your conscience is clear

In the m……………….. when I wipe my brow
Wipe the miles away
I like to t……………….. I can be so willed
And never do what you s……………….. (I’ll never hear you)
And never do what you s………………..

[CHORUS]
Look my e……………….. are just holograms
Look your l……………….. has drawn red from my hands
From my hands you know you'll never b………………..
More than twist in my sobriety

We just poked a little empty pie
For the f……………….. that people have at night
Late at night don't need hostility
The timid s……………….. and pause to free

Different thoughts are g……………….. for me
Up in arms and chaste and whole
All God's c……………….. took their toll

[CHORUS]

Time to risk a life a life a life
Sweet and h……………….. soft and porky

Tomorrow you’ll get another song exercise, this time about a song to dance, which reminds me of New Year’s Eve parties… Which one? – You have to wait till tomorrow!

KOHLANTA

Today I would like to you to get to know the reality show I have adored for a few years - Kohlanta. If you have ever lived in France you must have heard about this TV programme. The idea is simple - there are two groups of people who are to spend 40 days on an remote island. They are deprived of all comfort things - food, toiletries, beds, electricity, etc. They have a sack of rice to eat, they sleep on the floor, or beds made of leaves in a shelter they have built, they warm themselves up close to a firecamp they have made on their own. The two groups compete during various tests, which require stamina, physical and mental strength, intelligence, tactics, cooperation and fair play. There are two types of games - 'comfort games' which enable the team which have won to get some food, matches or a trip, and 'immunity games' which prevent the team from the necessity to eliminate one member of their team.  In each episode one contestant is eliminated. In the middle of the game the two teams are united and since then every member fights for themselves. At the end 3 last members have to face the test of poles (they are to stand on poles in the sea, the poles become smaller and smaller, the last remaining person wins). The person who has won the final test chooses one person he wishes. A group of the people who have been eliminated votes to decide which person deserves more to win the whole game and get a reward of about 10000e. France is currently broadcasing its 10th season of 'Kohlanta', which is a great success again. The game has proved since the very beggining that the most hard-working, adventurous, sporting and fair play people win.
Take a look at the contestants I have liked most :

Very sporting and pretty Jade

Freddy participated twice in Kohlanta!
At first a big coincited, later a bit more modest
...very hard-working and friendly!

Kind, intelligent, sporting...Greg!

If you have a chance to see the broadcast, give it a try..it's exciting and full of positive values!

"The King's Speech"

"The King's Speech" is a very good film, not only for lovers of British history. The film, which was directed by Tom Hooper, tells the story of George VI, the father of the current Queen of the UK, Elizabeth II. If you are a bit interested in the history of the UK, you must have heard about the story which appalled the British society in the second half of the 1930s. In 1936 Edward VIII became king. As king, he could not get married to his fiancee, Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced twice before. The king decided to abdicate and George VI succeeded to the throne. The king was a very shy man, whose terrible stutter made it impossible for him to give a speech. The film shows the king's trials to overcome his shyness, take control over his voice and become a great convincing speaker. The king seeks help of an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue. The film's climax is the king's speech on Britain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939. The film stars Colin Firth in the leading role of king George VI and Helena Bonham Carter, playing the king's wife, Elizabeth. To my mind, one person more definitely must be singled out - an American actor, Geoffrey Rush, who is outstanding in his role of the speech therapist. If you are not convinced yet to see the film, know that the film received 12 Oscar nominations, which was an achievement without precedent. The film got the Academy Award for the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Firth) and Best Original Screenplay (written by David Seidler).
The film, which is really convincing, sometimes funny and moving, amazes with its actors' acting and authenticity of set design. In my view, "The King's Speech" is definitely worth seeing.
Watch the film's trailer to get a glimpse of the extraordinary atmosphere of the movie :

In my next post you will find a listening exercise concerning the trailer.
